Studying MS Windows

Last Friday I was looking for a Windows Task Manager that would give more info than the standard one, and found this:
http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/index.html

I was surprised to see all sorts of programs running that I had never opened during the current session.

Today to go further and started with the Wikipedia article on Microsoft Windows:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Windows

My immediate interest is in preventing the automatic startup of unnecessary programs, so I looked at the Windows Startup Process:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Startup_Process

For Windows NT it says:
"There are several programs that let the user control which programs automatically start when a Windows NT system logs on, including StartU, OSAM: Autorun Manager and Autoruns."

The StartU link is broken. "OSAM: Autorun Manager" is here:
http://www.online-solutions.ru/en/osam_autorun_manager.php

I downloaded and installed this, but it seems difficult to use.

"Autoruns" is available on the TechNet website:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx

The above page notably says:
"Autoruns goes way beyond the MSConfig utility bundled with Windows Me and XP."

Continuing the Jabber sage (see yesterday's post for the beginning)

At work on my lunch break, I now try PSI:
http://psi-im.org

I try to register with livejournal.com, but nothing happens. The firewall must be blocking it.

I then download Pandion:
http://www.pandion.be/download

I try to connect with livejournal.com, and it is blocked again. But in the window that opens, it has a cell to enter the http of a proxy. This may be the way to go...

Jabber Epilogue

Added on Tuesday 10 Juin: I finally got PSI connected to Livejournal Monday evening at home. First it is necessary to be logged in to Livejournal: I may have forgot to do this during certain trials. And then you have to click on the right little icone in a drop-down menu, which I may have failed to notice. But this morning when I try to do this at work, it never connects: the firewall gets in the way. I need a proxy.

My Jabber fiasco

Mal Burns' SL Edu-Blog on LiveJournal:
http://malburns.livejournal.com/136293.html

Mal Burns profile on LiveJournal:
http://malburns.livejournal.com/profile

Looking at the LiveJournal profile of Mal Burns, I see I could IM him using Jabber.

Instructions for using Jabber chat on LiveJournal:
http://www.livejournal.com/chat

I download Miranda Jabber Client:
http://www.miranda-im.org

Which in turn requires download of OpenSSL:
http://www.slproweb.com/products/Win32OpenSSL.html

The Miranda installation process for some reason requires registration for ICQ chat:
http://chat.icq.com/icqchat

I end up with Danton's page on ICQ chat:
http://www.icq.com/people/about_me.php?uin=460249671

The Miranda menu shows Jabber, but won't open it. And ICQ is not a Jabber client. I go back to the list of recommended Jabber Clients on the Livejournal Talk page and decide to try Pidgin:
http://www.pidgin.im

I install Pidgin without noticing that Jabber is NOT one of the systems that Pidgin can work with. So next I try Gizmo LJ Talk:
http://www.livejournal.com/chat/download

But then when I try to entre my screen name, dantonsideways@livejournal.com turns out to be one character too long to fit in the window! Sheesh, they coulda told me there was a limit. So that is screwed too!

So I use Google to find a list of Jabber Clients:
http://www.jabber.org/clients

At the top of the list is Psi, which I installed once, but disinstalled because it would always open when my computer did, and I couldn't unset that.

to be continued...
