From Ugo Trade's post on Virtual Worlds 2008:
http://www.ugotrade.com/2008/04/11/the-architects-of-the-open-source-metaverse-at-virtual-worlds-2008
*Ben Goertzel of the AI company Novamente is doing AI for virtual pets in Multiverse.
*Adam Frisby: "If you build the object and you allow it to be transferred from one server to another then at that point the people who it’s being transferred to can copy it. And this is just a fundamental thing. If someone is going to copy something they can make another copy."
*Peter Quirk of EMC feels that OpenSim LSL is already forking from the Second Life LSL.
*Philip Rosedale asks if OpenSim will use Mono: http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/01/29/mono-beta-launch
*Yani Pirkola: "we hope and see that there are going to be many realXtend servers around the world, like today there are Apache servers." Apache is a web server, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_server
*Yani Pirkola: "We have started donating all our content that we do in the project for public use, in this CC license, attribution only, corresponds to the BSD license on the code side. So you can take and use it. I haven’t yet seen any, at least I don’t know any good open source project around open content."
*Adam Frisby: "It’s an interesting point. There is the Google warehouse. That would be a fantastic thing to integrate so you can grab drag and drop items from there and they’re all in collada." See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/COLLADA
*David Levine: "There are groups now in Second Life like Clever Zebra doing open content intentionally for open use."
*David Levine: "I think what’s going to happen is there’ll be self grouping. We’re going to have large clusters of people who have a similar philosophy on content, and they’re going to find ways to interoperate."

My recent comments

On FriendFeed there should be a way to show the recent comments that you have made on other peoples' blogs. That can sometimes be a major part of one's productive output. Maybe there is a way to tag the comments on Digg or Delicious or something, so that they will show up in the FriendFeed stream.

At any rate, I'm going to paste here the links to various comments I've made recently, so that I can find them easily if I want to add them to some kind of feed.

Open Source SL Viewer Part 1

Start with the Open Source page on the "SL Grid" website:
http://secondlifegrid.net/programs/open_source

Click on sub-heading "code download":
http://secondlifegrid.net/programs/open_source/code

Click on "viewer source code archive page":
http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Source_downloads

Being wary of version 1.20, I think I downloaded the following:
*ver 1.19.1.4 (2008-Apr-07)

To understand what you have got, go back to the "code download" page and click on "viewer source":
http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Viewer_source

Get source and compile:
http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Get_source_and_compile

Windows builds:
http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Microsoft_Windows_Builds

Windows alternatives include:
* Linden Supported Compilers (Visual Studio .NET 2003 Professional)
* Community Supported Compilers (Visual C++ 2005 Express)
* Community Experimental Compilers (Visual C++ 2008 Express or Linux with gcc)

Here are instructions for compiling with Visual C++ 2005 Express:
http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Compiling_the_viewer_%28MSVS2005%29

Setting up "Microsoft Visual Studio":
http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Microsoft_Visual_Studio

Following these instructions I downloaded and installed:
* Visual C++ 2005 Express
* Microsoft Platform SDK
* DirectX 9.0 SDK (December 2006)

Go back to "compiling with Visual C++ 2005" to install some open source development tools:
* Cygwin (When running cygwin setup utility I selected to install patchutils, flex, and bison, all located under "devel", which are not part of the default install)
*ActivePython 2.3x or later

This "compiling with" page also states:
* The SL Viewer depends on third party libraries, some of which are open source (I've already downloaded these), some others are not.
*"The VS2003 libraries provided in the source downloads do not fully work with VS2005 compiled binaries."

The installation of the proprietary libraries seems terribly complicated.

Go forward to "Microsoft Visual Studio" for "Setup the project globals"

OpenSim Part 1

Start with the Main Page of the OpenSim website:
http://opensimulator.org/wiki/Main_Page

Click on the "Download" icon:
http://opensimulator.org/wiki/Download

Version 0.5.6 Alpha is available in tar.gz zip format.

Click on the "User Docs" icon:
http://opensimulator.org/wiki/User_Documentation

The "Download" icon here goes back to the same "Download" page listed above. Click on the "Build Instructions":
http://opensimulator.org/wiki/OpenSim_Build_Instructions

The Build Instructions for MS-Windows say that OpenSim supports the following compilers:
*Microsoft Visual C# Express Edition
*mono

Another web log experiment

How to save in one place all of the interesting links I stumble across on internet? Keeping a record of links was the original purpose of the first web logs or "blogs." Now there are other ways, such as bookmark sites. But I want to see if it works for me to keep them here. So here is goes:

A site that gives you your twitter statistics (thanks to catmagellan on twitter):

First comment: actually Blogger is not great for this because it fails to automatically transclude the links, and I have to "insert link". But at least it is faster than Mediawiki on my personal website.

Article about growing the Flickr community (from Jjacek on twitter):

iYan Writer's Google feed shared items (Digado subscribed):

Hey, this is working pretty well. I can always "insert links" later, to be able to just click on them.

VidalTripsa uninstalled weblin. AlKronos also.

Digado didn't like probloggers tips for twitterers.
